Conscious skincare starts with reading: What INCI lists really reveal

Many people believe that a natural origin automatically means effectiveness. But the truth lies — as so often — in the details. More precisely: in the order of ingredients.

The INCI list (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) on your product shows you what’s really inside — and in what amount. Understanding it allows you to make more conscious decisions and choose skincare products that genuinely benefit your skin.

What is the INCI list?

INCI stands for International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. This list, found on cosmetics packaging, lists all ingredients in descending order of their proportion in the formula. The first three to five ingredients typically make up the bulk of the product. Anything listed further down is present in significantly lower amounts (less than 1%).

Less is more — if it’s consciously formulated

A long list full of unfamiliar ingredients is not necessarily better. In fact, products with fewer, purposefully selected ingredients are often more effective. Why? Because the concentration of high-quality oils and extracts is higher, each component serves a specific function.

A practical example: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride

This ingredient is often found in natural cosmetics — especially in so-called “dry oils.” It’s a lightweight, colorless oil typically derived from coconut or palm. It provides a silky skin feel, absorbs quickly, and helps extend the product’s shelf life.

What it doesn’t do: It contains no vitamins, no antioxidants, and offers little to no skin care benefits. If this ingredient appears before oils like argan, rosehip, or CO₂ extracts in the INCI list, the product is likely focused more on texture and cost optimization than on skin performance.

The art of recognizing quality

Conscious formulation means that every oil, extract, and antioxidant is chosen with intention. Brands that follow this path rely on ingredients that bring real benefits to the skin — not just fancy names.

What to look for:

  • Position of the oils: High-quality oils like argan, jojoba, or rosehip should be listed as early as possible.

  • CO₂ extracts: Known for their potency, these offer maximum active concentration thanks to their gentle extraction process.

  • Few, targeted ingredients: The shorter the list, the clearer the formula — and often, the more concentrated the effect.

  • Avoid empty fillers: Ingredients like "Parfum", mineral oils, or certain silicones rarely contribute to skin health.

The role of price

A high price doesn’t guarantee quality — but an honest price reflects the selection and concentration of active ingredients. Packaging, fragrance, and marketing play a role — but the real value is found in the INCI list.

True quality isn’t always visible at first glance — but your skin can feel the difference.

Transparency you can trust

At Lolo Cosmetics, we consciously choose quality over compromise. Our formulations contain only 100% natural, cold-pressed plant oils, carefully selected for their proven skin benefits and high tolerability.

We avoid entirely diluting fillers, isolated triglycerides with no skincare benefit, or synthetic additives. Because your skin deserves more than just a nice feeling — it deserves true care.

Our products are the result of a deliberate selection process, where each oil serves a function and every ingredient has a reason. Nothing more, nothing less.

True natural cosmetics are more than just a trend. They’re a promise to your skin — and to yourself.

For you — to reflect on

Take time to consciously read the INCI lists of your cosmetics. Not everything that looks natural actually is. And not everything that seems minimalist is ineffective.

Conscious skincare starts with your decision — and with what you truly want to offer your skin.
